The History Of Garage Doors, And Your Future Garage Door
The first garage doors arrived around the same time the first wheels were invented. The first wheels were created around 3500 B.C. in Mesopotamia. This was 300 years before they were used on chariots. Since the time transportation on wheels were invented, people have been searching for places to park, protect and put their modes of wheeled transportation.
The word garage originated from the French word garer, which means “shelter.” Carriage houses were the original structures that housed modes of transportation, including horses. In 1908, Sears Roebuck & Company introduced a portable garage that could be ordered. With the availability of cars on the rise, thanks to Henry Ford, everyone was searching for a place to store their valuable possession.
The overhead garage door came on the scene in 1921. These doors, invented by C.G. Johnson, had hinged panels that bent as the door lifted. This was a big shift from the carriage doors that swung open from side-to-side. In 1926, Mr. Johnson invented an electric garage door opener, and garages began to expand in size and potential for use. To avoid garage door accidents, photoelectric and pressure sensors were required by law to avoid accidental deaths or injuries due to garage door closings.
