June is Garage Door Safety Month

garage door safety

The garage door is likely the most used door in any home. With June being Garage Door Safety Month, now is an ideal time to talk about garage door safety and what you can do to ensure that your garage door works as smoothly and securely as possible.

In most houses, the garage door or doors open and close multiple times a day. With the onset of summer here in Georgia, following home quarantine from COVID-19, kids are notorious for going in and out all day long. The most frequent entrance and exit point of the home is typically through the door that leads to the garage. Garage Door Safety Month aligns perfectly with the season we are in because of the high usage that garage doors get during this time of year. Making sure that your garage door is operating efficiently, smoothly, and safely should be a priority for all homeowners.

Safety Tip Checklist for Your Garage Door System

  1. Replace Old Springs – Arguably the most essential feature of your garage door system, garage door springs act as a counterbalance to the garage door’s weight. These springs are under an incredible amount of tension, and severe injury can occur if they should break. It is vital that you check the garage door springs on a regular basis and have them replaced by a professional technician if needed.
  2. Squeaky Springs? – A squeaky garage door is an annoying garage door. The squeaking noise is caused by normal wear and tear, which does not necessarily indicate a problem. Before contacting a professional service technician, you can apply a spray-on lubricant that is recommended especially for garage doors. After application, if the noise continues, contact your garage door repair company. There may be an underlying problem that needs to be addressed.
  3. Inspect the Cables – Garage door cables enable the garage door to move up and down along the track. It is important to visually inspect these cables and look for any signs of fraying or weakening. If they show signs of breaking down, they are in danger of breaking – allowing the garage door to fall. Garage door cables should only be replaced by a trained, licensed professional.
  4. Struggling Door or Motor – If your garage door does not go up and down smoothly, you will most likely have an unsafe condition. If left unchecked and unrepaired, damage can occur to your entire garage door system. It does not matter how old your garage door system is, all garage doors should operate smoothly. Struggling doors are dangerous, and you should call a professional repair technician immediately.
  5. Examine the Garage Door’s Rollers and Track – Garage door rollers are the wheels that move the garage door up and down the track. If these rollers are damaged, they will not allow for smooth operation. If the garage door track is damaged, the rollers may “skip” on the track; this creates a safety hazard because the entire garage door could fall off its track. Check to make sure the garage door rollers and tracks are in good condition.

Also a shout-out to Jared for his installation work...you know you're going to get quality work from a Jared...definitely don't settle for Jerrys or Joshes or Jerrods. Thank you Habpro for getting our garage doors back in business.

Bill responded with in 30 minutes of me asking him to see if he could fix a sagging overlayed 16x7 garage door. 6 other garage door companies all said I need a new overlay door. Approximately $6 thousand dollars. Bill look at photos I sent him and had one of his guys Chuck there the next morning. Fixed the door for less than 3% of what the other guys wanted. He’ll get my business when I need that new door. Honest and great people! No joke!!

Bill and his team were professional and on time. Bill took the time (answered my call on Easter!) to explain the process and price before coming out. Garage door is working again and we are so appreciative!

When my garage door stopped working, I called Habpro. After asking me a few questions, the company representative suggested that I might be able to fix the problem myself. He then patiently walked me through the process of adjusting the garage door sensors. Despite my insistence on paying him for his time, knowledge, and patience, he refused any compensation. I have received services from many companies; this was the first time compensation was not expected. My garage door is working properly and my faith in the kindness of people is just a bit stronger.
