Not everyone gets to build a house from the ground up, but for those who do, you know that there are hundreds of decisions to be made. Throughout the entire process of building a home, there are certain stages where your input is critical. Many people become exhausted at the number of decisions that must be made, yet it is important to remember two things:
- You are spending a huge amount of money on your new home, and you want to make sure that your money is well spent.
- This is a home where you will live for years to come, maybe forever, and even the smallest decision will matter in the long run.
During the home-building process, some people like to be involved in every decision. Where do you want outlets to go? Do you want to push out a closet to make more room in the guest bathroom? Do you want panels in the windows? Where do you want can lights installed? What finishes do you want for your appliances? How thick do you want the padding under your carpet? What stain do you want for your hardwood floors? The decisions go on and on!
One area that many people often overlook is the type of garage that they want. The decision about garage door planning needs to be made early on in the process. If you do not give your input into the design, you will either have to live with something you possibly do not like, or you will have to spend extra money to have your garage space re-done. Therefore, you need to be prepared to be involved in the home building process from the very start.
When it comes to garage door planning, there are more options than you may have ever considered. The first decision you need to make, though, is how wide and deep your garage space needs to be. How many cars do you plan on parking inside the garage? Do you have two or three smaller cars? Or, do you have a pickup and an SUV? Thousands of homeowners have been unpleasantly surprised to find that they cannot park two vehicles inside a double garage because the opening is not wide enough. This is why it is crucial for you to be involved in every stage of the home building process!
You will also need to decide whether you want to install multiple single garage doors or a wide double door. There are pros and cons to both options.
Multiple Single Garage Doors
Having multiple single garage doors gives your home an upscale look. It presents a polished entry to the garage where a single garage door can be lifted for each car. This saves many people from exposing all of the junk that has collected in the garage each time a garage door is opened. Another positive feature is that if there is a malfunction to one of the garage doors, you will generally still be able to use the other door. This means you will still be able to get at least one car out.
However, multiple single garage doors are a little more expensive than one large double door. Not only will you need multiple electric garage door openers, but there is the additional cost of building a narrow wall between the two single doors.
Wide Double Garage Door
Most homeowners opt for a double garage door because it is practical and less expensive. A double garage door makes it easy to enter and exit the garage because there is only one door to fool with. There is only one electric opener to control the garage door, and there is less maintenance on a single door.
However, if there is a malfunction with the garage door, both cars will be trapped inside until the issue is resolved. You also must make sure that your garage door opening is sized correctly if you want to park multiple cars inside.
